How we met: love at the first lie
A sense of humor wins the sorority girl’s heart at the end
Greg and Mimi Butler are best known as the owners of the Buenos Grill in western Reno, which they have run together since 1999. But more than a decade before this chapter in their lives, Greg and Mimi were just two students. at the University of Nevada, Reno, destined to meet at a fellowship party, of all places.
“I remember feeling drawn to Greg the first night we met,” Mimi says. “It was like that comfortable feeling of being around someone you have known and loved for a long time.”
However, their relationship didn’t traditionally start – you could even say it was based on a lie, even if a sweet relationship made Mimi laugh. You see, around the same time Greg and Mimi met, a student had fallen into the elevator shaft (and survived) in Nye Hall. Greg, his arm in a sling from a skiing accident, tried to convince Mimi that he was that student.
It turns out that Greg is not the best to make people believe. “I knew he was joking about his injury since his story changed over the course of the evening,” Mimi recalls.
Either way, Mimi continued to let Greg pretend as she helped him make s’mores in the fraternity fireplace, and the night ultimately led to a foosball showdown and a bet that Greg could beat Mimi, even with one hand. The loser should buy the winning ice cream.
“I won,” says Greg.
However, the two didn’t end up exchanging phone numbers and so it took months to cross paths on campus – a feat Greg was almost achieving by “accidentally” bumping into her over and over again. times – before that date actually. come. And Mimi kept her word by paying for Greg’s ice cream.
Soon after, Mimi invited Greg to a sorority dance at a French restaurant, ironically named Mimi’s Hideaway (unrelated to Mimi or the current Mimi’s restaurant in town).
“I think I started to feel like it was serious shortly after our first real date,” recalls Greg. “By our first meeting, we had already started to build a foundation.”
April 15, 1986 – three years to the day from that first date – Greg took Mimi to a French restaurant in Lake Tahoe called Le Petit Pier, where he asked the question. And the rest, as they say, is history.
When Mimi and Greg first met, Greg was already working at Chart House in Stateline as a dishwasher. During their dating, he rose through the ranks and built a successful career in restaurant management in California and Oregon. When the couple were ready to return to Reno, with their two-year-old in tow, they decided to go on their own.
With Greg’s knowledge of the kitchen, his love for Mexican food and his affinity for restaurant management and Mimi’s sales acumen (his previous career was in the retail of cosmetics and perfumes), he didn’t It’s no surprise that Buenos Grill has been a Reno staple for over 20 years. The couple celebrated the 22 of the restaurantnd birthday on April 19.
As for the key to their romantic success, this recipe is more difficult to crack.
Greg says, “Remember what you love about each other and take the time to share that love.”
“Spend time together doing things you love,” says Mimi. “Be a good listener, adaptable to change and loving.”
