Need volunteers for a new youth club
A new youth center is opening in New Ross this fall and volunteers are urgently needed to help set it up.
supported by FDYS, the center will provide a safe and fun space for adolescents and young adults to meet.
FDYS worker Michelle Sinnott said the Nunnery Lane Youth Center is a great place because there is enough space for social distancing.
“We’re going to make it work a few nights a week. We plan to have table tennis, arts and crafts and more, ”Michelle said.
Having run the Ballykelly Youth Club for years, Michelle said there was a definite need for a youth club in New Ross where group discussions and other supports could be made available to young people.
The Shambles Youth Café was a big hit when its doors were opened before Covid and will resume their meaning later in the year, subject to the lifting of social distancing restrictions, but it’s too small a space to be. open to people this fall.
“We plan to open the youth club for September. People cannot be out forever. It is aimed at people aged 10 to 20. We need as many volunteers as possible to make it work. After that, the parents will come on board.
With the help of Bishop Joe McGrath, the center is made available and a request for funding has been submitted to WWETB.
Regarding social distancing, Michelle said the club will run over a few nights to limit the numbers early on. “Anyone who is there as a volunteer will receive training on child protection and covid – all provided by FDYS. Volunteers will be needed for about two and a half hours as the center will be open from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. ‘
