TalkTalk TV 2022 Review | Is he good?
By Dan Howdle | Monday, May 10, 2021
The main selling point of TalkTalk for TV is simplicity and flexibility. You can choose and mix streaming services to add each month without committing to long contracts. But before you read on, it’s important to note that TalkTalk TV is not a stand-alone product. It is only available for homes with TalkTalk fiber broadband. Having said that, let’s take a look.
|Number of channels||Up to 80|
|Technology||Internet and antenna|
|Can bundle with broadband?||Fiber connection required|
|Digital decoder||See you|
|Price from||£ 35.95 per month|
TalkTalk’s TV offer comes in the form of a basic YouView box with up to 80 TNT channels, including 15 in HD. Freeview channels are subject to location and you will need a rooftop antenna to receive them. Along with BBC, ITV, and Channels 4 and 5, Freeview also includes Horror Channel, Sony Movies, Paramount Network, Really and Dave. It also includes a number of +1 channels.
For Freeview, the precise channel availability will depend on where you live, your broadband speed where you live, and the quality of your TV antenna reception.
Customers can choose to add a range of paid extras to the basic Freeview offering, including NOW TV Cinema, Entertainment, Kids, or Sport – or all. You can also access Netflix and Amazon Prime through the YouView box, all of which are subject to additional subscription fees.

TalkTalk TV offers the same YouView box for all customers who want its TV services. YouView was designed by BT, TalkTalk and the telecommunications company Arqiva, and is also offered by BT to its TV customers.
The TalkTalk YouView box is very basic and doesn’t offer the ability to record, but you can pause and rewind live TV for up to 30 minutes. There is access to approximately 80 Freeview channels and seven days of catch-up on some channels for some programs. However, with the plethora of on-demand TVs available, the lack of recording facility is neither here nor there.
To watch both TNT channels and TV on demand, you will need to connect your YouView box to both an external antenna and your internet connection. On-demand services such as NOW TV are provided via an internet connection while Freeview channels require an antenna.
You can enjoy a number of free apps on the YouView box, including BBC iPlayer, All4, and ITV Player, all of which are preinstalled, although you need to register before you can watch. You can also choose to subscribe to NOW TV, Netflix, and Amazon Prime, all available on YouView, to enjoy a huge range of premium TV shows and movies.
NOW TV Entertainment – NOW Entertainment offers 19 premium channels, including the coveted Sky Atlantic, as well as Sky One, Comedy Central, Sky Arts, Syfy and National Geographic, offering a fantastic selection of viewing, HBO masterpieces, such as Game of Thrones to the exciting Van Helsing.
NOW TV Cinema – From old golden classics to the latest Hollywood releases, NOW TV Cinema offers over 1000 movies available on demand on 11 categorized channels, with channels inspired by seasons such as Christmas and Halloween providing additional entertainment. From horror and sci-fi to the latest romantic thrillers and comedies, to a plethora of Sky Cinema originals, you’ll never run out of something to watch.
NOW TV Sports – A must-have for any sports fan, a NOW TV Sports subscription gives you access to 11 Sky Sports channels where you can watch the latest Premier League games, enjoy the thrills of F1 or immerse yourself in cricket. Plus, with American NFL games, rugby, golf, boxing and more, there’s something for every sports fan.
NOW TV Children – If you have young children, NOW TV Kids is a no-brainer, providing access to the ever-favorite Boomerang, Nicktoons, Nick Jr, Nickelodeon, Cartoonito and Cartoon Network channels. Plus, there’s on-demand access to thousands of shows, from Scooby Doo to Powerpuff Girls to keep kids entertained.
Amazon Prime Video – Signing up for Amazon Prime gives you both free and cheap fast delivery from the website as well as access to a range of TV shows and movies through the streaming app. Amazon also produces a number of its own shows, including the much-loved Patriot and The Man in the High Castle.
Netflix – Still a leader in the race for streaming apps, Netflix offers a vast amount of television, from international dramas to Hollywood blockbusters. There are also kids’ shows, family movies, and classic British comedies like Fawlty Towers and The Inbetweeners, as well as a slew of Netflix originals like After Life, The Crown, and Stranger Things.
If you want to watch TalkTalk TV in a second room, you can pay an additional £ 25 to get a second YouView box. Thanks to your second box, you will be able to access everything you can with your first one, including all the NOW TV subscriptions that you have added to your package. Keep in mind that you will need a minimum download speed of 20 Mbps to support multiroom.
You will need to contact TalkTalk customer service to add more parts and they will send an engineer to install it. In addition to an internet connection, you will also need an antenna to watch TNT channels on your second box.

Adding TalkTalk TV to TalkTalk broadband
Because TalkTalk TV requires a fiber connection, existing TalkTalk broadband customers can choose to upgrade their broadband service to fiber and then add TalkTalk TV to their plan. Existing TalkTalk Fiber customers can add TalkTalk TV without having to make any changes to their broadband service.
Our final verdict
- Value for money
- Choice of extensions
- Access to Sky Atlantic via NOW TV
- Only Freeview channels as standard
- No option to record on the YouView box
- Only available with fiber broadband
With the removal of its TV Boosts, TalkTalk has now resized its TV offering and as a result, it makes no attempt to compete with the impressive TV packages from Virgin Media, Sky or even BT. Additionally, with the fiber broadband requirement for TalkTalk TV, customers who can only access standard broadband will be left behind.
However, if you can get fiber and are looking for a basic TV package with a box that allows access to Freeview channels, then TalkTalk TV is a good bet and an affordable option. You can pause and rewind live channels, and the ability to add month-long continuous streaming services like NOW TV, Amazon Prime, and Netflix is likely to tick all the boxes for the majority of households.
