What we are looking for

ISGlobal is looking for an experienced epidemiologist who is interested in working in the “MULTIple doses of IPTi, (MULTIPLY)” project. MULTIPLY is a multi-country implementation project, which includes European and African public and private institutions aimed at maximizing the delivery and uptake of Intermittent Preventive Treatment of Malaria in Infants (IPTi), to reach the full potential and the effectiveness of this intervention. It will be conducted in selected districts of Mozambique, Sierra Leone and Togo.

The project

The 40-month project, which started in May 2021, is funded by the European and Developing Countries Trial Partnership (EDCTP) and coordinated by ISGlobal, the Barcelona Institute for Global Health, in partnership with the Research Institute for Development (IRD), France, Fundaçao Manhiça (FM), Mozambique, University of Lomé (UL), Togo, University of Sierra Leone, Sierra Leone and Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV), Switzerland.

The consortium will work closely with the Ministries of Health of Sierra Leone, Togo and Mozambique, the World Health Organization (WHO) as well as other stakeholders, to ensure that all results of the project are achieved.

MULTIPLY will generate evidence of change and expand access to infant malaria chemoprevention in sub-Saharan Africa by applying a community-based approach that fosters partnership and strengthens the dynamic link between communities and health facilities, especially for people the most vulnerable. A learning-driven approach will be used throughout the project to generate enough evidence to inform WHO policy recommendations and future actions in each country, with the aim of scaling up the intervention in the long term.

ISGlobal is the lead assessment and research organization and is responsible for implementing a set of studies to generate evidence for global guidance on IPTi. Specifically, ISGlobal is responsible for the design and implementation of the project evaluation plan, as well as the design, analysis and reporting of clinical and operational research studies to assess the effectiveness and efficiency of the project. impact of the intervention, including its feasibility of the intervention through the EPI.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop study protocols, source documents and other technical documents in collaboration with local counterparts
  • Support and oversee monitoring and evaluation of IPTi implementation and related research studies in project countries
  • Oversee data collection activities
  • Support all operational research activities
  • Coordinate, oversee and execute training activities with local counterparts as required
  • Perform priority research and analysis
  • Quality assurance for data analysis leading to report and scientific publication
  • Interact with ISGlobal colleagues and local counterparts in project countries
  • Prepare documents for various meetings and research conferences as needed
  • Support in the development of progress reports, work plans and other documents as required
  • Report your project activities
  • Scientific writing of manuscripts resulting from research activities

FUNCTIONS

Under the direction of the MULTIPLY project director and the project manager, the candidate will:

  • Conduct and oversee training in project countries
  • Interact with local counterpart implementation team in project countries
  • Prepare and present reports on activities and field trips
  • Travel to project countries to implement and oversee project monitoring, evaluation and research activities
  • Perform any other task that is within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job, as requested

SKILLS

Qualifications:

  • Advanced university degree in biomedical sciences
  • Master’s or doctoral studies in epidemiology or public health

Live:

  • At least 3 years of experience in epidemiology
  • Ideally, experience in monitoring and evaluation of health interventions
  • Ideally, experience working in low- or middle-income countries

Required Skills:

  • Full-time schedule and exclusive dedication
  • A very good command (advanced level) of the English language; a working knowledge (intermediate level) of Portuguese and French is a plus
  • Knowledge of Spanish or Catalan is a plus
  • Writing ability to produce high quality and concise technical reports
  • Ability to take initiative, coordinate and work as a team in multicultural environments, and to interact with staff from project countries, government organizations and NGOs
  • Flexibility, open to new ideas and new ways of working, adapting positively to change, exchanging views and opinions with colleagues. Able to work independently while understanding own limitations
  • Oriented towards training and knowledge transfer to biomedical personnel in African contexts
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, STATA (or similar statistical packages), communication applications and web technologies

Desirable:

  • Ability to adapt to new environments, work effectively in a team and show initiative when needed
  • Ability to design and develop activities, achieve specific milestones and deliverables, and meet deadlines
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Have a genuine interest in biomedical infectious disease research, capacity building and global development

We offer

  • Full-time position, based in Barcelona
  • Fixed-term contract for the entire duration of the project
